A year ago I would have never thought "PLAY SAAF"

The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation acquired a one year grant (with a modest budget) to start its first ever community wide social marketing campaign to increase HIV education and testing. After five months of research of existing sex health campaigns, surveying the community of their knowledge of SAAF and HIV, working with local public health partners and media partners, focus groups, concept design options, testing and more testing SAAF came down to its decision.

The multi-media campaign goes by the name PLAY SAAF; using testimonials from strong, sex-positive individuals whose business may be risky, but still know how to play safe (i.e. firefighter, wild animal tamer, professional gambler, bronco rider and fighter pilot). The advertising directs its audience to PlaySAAF.org, where you can find information on where to get tested, and how a test works; where to find free condoms, and info about their use and variety; resources for education offered at SAAF through many prevention programs (as well as living with HIV services). The idea is to re-brand SAAF (safe) Sex as not just using a condom, but it being essential to educate yourself and test regularly for HIV/STDs.

PLAY SAAF is currently seen and heard outdoor, in print, radio, TV and Theatre, Web, and live in-person appearances at SAAF fundraisers (and some mobile testing). A few last tools are being finalized (text hotline, online kits, mobile testing schedule, contests).

Impromptu Frittata

4 eggs broken in medium sized pan, no heat. Drop in diced carrots, black olives, green onion and green pepper. And a splash or two of Tabasco and/or Worshishire sauce. Season with garlic, salt, pepper.

Heat on medium stove top until bottom cooks through. Then flip and cook for one additional minute.

Empty one can of diced tomatoes into saucepan and add in "Italian seasoning", heat to taste.

Tear several leaves from a head of Romaine or Celtuce Letttuce.

Place cooked egg on top of lettuce leaves, top with tomatoes and garnish with a Salsa Verde.

Sarah and I met up again, for what has become, a once a year face to face (half-day). I never know what's going to happen other than magnetic Haikus, the tradition that holds us together, and lends a name to this entry. At the coffee shop they had a pony wall that separated the dining room from the check out line, and on one side there was a chalk board. Pictured above is about as far as we got, with the help of a couple adorable six and three year old British lads (try and guess which were drawn by us and by them). Who, after a long discussion of Rugby and American Football, prized us with this:

I only manufactured paper words twice, and that's because they were originally in the pack (then lost) anyways.

Before for we said goodbye we attempted a shot together, but with no available employees and outlasting all patrons, I just set the camera on a timer and we decided to make a short story loosely based on the events of the day. Only, it would read like "perfect strangers connect in a modern day bohemian rest stop."

And we shook hands and said goodbye (for presumably) another year.

Nothing says holidays like... erotic gingerbread cookies?

Cookies are one of those traditions that seems to get lost as the children of the family grow up. Right along with getting an actual living tree. But there are always trade-offs when transitioning into your adulthood. While staring at an artificial, pre-lit tree fresh out of a box I sip my egg nog and brandy and it starts to look as beautiful as the one I fantasized about in all my nostalgia.

As I start to spend more time away from the family, now graduated and employed and in my own place- I see myself trying to create feelings of holiday. You might have noticed, hunting for pumpkins to carve for Halloween, and now cruising the streets of Winterhaven, the Residential Festival of Lights and Christmas District of Tucson, and baking cookies with some of my more culinarily (in possession of culinary skills) inclined friends.

But in making traditions in my life now on my own, I have to do it my own way. And sometimes that means shaking things up. So when Alana and I were charged with bringing something "Christmassy" to the first winter party of the season, that obviously meant erotic gingerbread cookies. A classic sentiment with a new twist.

In life I like to take my camera. It's a hassle to care for your equipment, and most of my friends are shy unless there's a little to drink, but any new landscape or adventure it goes. Of course the times when I've had the most fun, the camera is never around nor is there a pen and paper to write it all down. One Monday in January following lunch, a friend and I spontaneously decided to drive up to Mt. Lemon. Stopped off to get a disposable camera, and when we got to the base of the mountain it was closed for road maintenance. I hadn't taken a single photo so I kept it in my car and it took me seven months to fill up enough photos and develop the film. I guess what I'm insinuating is I've been having a lot of fun.

But when you want to look back, that's when you need something tangible. Journals and sketches and 4x6s. I thought nostalgia was something that you outgrow, but maybe I have it reversed. After I moved to Tucson and started college, I left behind all of my things from High School. I gained new memories. Collected more nostalgia. My last year of college I purged again. And when I moved to Seattle, and I missed Tucson I didn’t have anything. So now when I come across old snap shots or comic illustrations I haven’t thrown them away. Am I not ready to say goodbye this time? Or can I finally live the now and also appreciate my past?

What ever it is, I take my camera. And maybe I don’t have to decide.

My brother wants his first tattoo

Growing up, my family has always been very close and proud. But my brother and I never really had a built in identity-- we weren't in a long line of war fighters or scientists or passing on a family-owned business. My dad took an interest in researching his family line after he found some old pictures. He wrote the story for us so that we would never forget and pass it on. So when I ran across some Knaack history when developing a design for our family crest, or coat of arms, I was surprised at what I found. There is more information that you can possibly ever want when it comes to ancestry-- and I only say that because the more I looked, the less clear we became. Conflicting stories about immigration and occupation. I know how my family came to be in North America, but apparently so does everyone else and for only $49.99 you can learn until you're heart's content!

I asked my brother, "So do you want to be the Knaack who was butcher, or the Knaack who is young or has a youthful appearance?"

"Well, I think the cleaver looks more bad ass so lets go with that."

And it was decided. I imagine the final version will look very different before it hits the skin but until then:

I made friends with these academic art kids late in high school. I thought they were cool because they were who I wish I had the guts to be at seventeen. Leanne excelled in drawing and creative writing. I openly referred to her as my "Maestro" (in fact even made her a t-shirt saying that exactly). It wasn't long before I felt comfortable asking her to help me out with my own work. When I had to portfolio into film school I needed brand new photography; ten photographs that told a story. At the time I felt very distinct with the raw, unadulterated look of Polaroid. "No Photoshop or zoom lens," I'd boast, "you either have it or you don't with an old point-and-shoot." The only problem was that Leanne, for no one, would get in front of a camera. So I just started following her around, using the testimonials of Reality TV contestants as my logic, and hoping that eventually she'd forget that the camera was even there. She never forgot, but we did get some good stuff. And I got in. So you know, what ever that means.

Fall 2007 I began pre-production work on my senior thesis film, and inadvertently became obsessed with puppet making. For weeks it became an accepted pastime, among my closest friends at least, and I took a few photos to document it. I came across the shoe box full of glitter, fishing line and dried glue bottles and remembered how proud I was of my friends' impromptu paper mache skills.

That was Michaela and I with the water color.

Oh yeah, wine was usually there.

And looking at it now, I'm glad Alana went all the way with the gold even though Jessica wasn't crazy about it.

I just moved Downtown and in the process found the 35mm Pentax my Dad gave me a couple years back. I thought I had lost it. There were 16 pictures taken already so I finished off the role just to find out what was on it. Turns out it was loaded wrong and instead ended up photog-doc-ing my neighborhood.

I run into the producer from my most recent film at the grocery store and he is surprised to see me still in town. We haven't talked since the film wrapped and I spoke terribly of him at the After Screening Party. “I’m here sort of vacationing before I head back up Northwest.”

“Oh, very cool. I’ve just been P.A.ing on set for that Mendez film and now that it’s over trying to get on Transformers 2.”

He looks down at the pre-packaged deli sandwich in his hands, “And for money I’m just working at Raytheon in the media department." I maintain eye contact as I push my cart away and pull it back. And then fake launch myself. He continues, "For some reason I thought you had a job like right after graduation?”

“The company I interned for last summer is supposed to call this week about some Post Production Coordinator position. I told them I needed some time.”

“Lucky you got into that. I know Raytheon would never be that cool.” Cough. “Oh, and I got your DVD, and I watched it. I was like, ‘Very Cool.’”

While starting to walk away I say, “Well I should get going, good luck with Transformers.”

“And you with your job too.”
